How to Fix 'deployment crash during development' in AutoGen (TypeScript)

When AutoGen says deployment crash during development, it usually means the agent runtime failed before it could finish starting the model-backed deployment. In TypeScript projects, this most often shows up while wiring up AssistantAgent, OpenAIChatCompletionClient, or a custom model client during local dev.

The key thing: this is rarely an “agent logic” problem. It’s usually a startup/config problem, and the crash happens before your conversation code even runs.

The Most Common Cause

The #1 cause is an invalid or incomplete model client configuration. In AutoGen TypeScript, that usually means one of these:

  • missing apiKey
  • wrong model name
  • malformed baseURL
  • using a provider-specific client with the wrong environment variables

Here’s the broken pattern I see most often:

Why this fails in practice:

- `process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY` is often `undefined` in local dev
- TypeScript won’t always catch it if your env typing is loose
- AutoGen may surface this as a deployment/runtime crash instead of a clean config error

If you’re using Azure OpenAI, the same issue shows up with mismatched fields:

Missing `apiVersion` is a classic reason Azure-backed agents die during initialization.

## Other Possible Causes

### 1. Wrong package version mismatch

AutoGen packages need to stay aligned. Mixing older `@autogen/core` with newer provider packages can trigger startup failures.

Fix by pinning compatible versions together and checking release notes.

2. Node.js version too old

Some AutoGen TypeScript setups require modern Node features. If you’re on an old runtime, deployment can fail before the agent starts.

3. Invalid tool schema or function signature

If you register tools with malformed JSON schema or unsupported parameter types, the agent may crash while building the deployment graph.

4. Missing network access or blocked endpoint

If your local machine, container, or CI runner cannot reach the model endpoint, startup can fail and look like a deployment crash.

How to Debug It

  1. Print the exact stack trace

    • Don’t stop at the top-level message.
    • Look for lines mentioning:
      • OpenAIChatCompletionClient
      • AzureOpenAIChatCompletionClient
      • AssistantAgent
      • modelClient
  2. Validate environment variables before constructing the client

    • Remove tools.
    • Remove memory.
    • Remove multi-agent orchestration.
    • Keep only one agent and one model client.

    If the crash disappears, the problem is in your tooling or orchestration layer.

  4. Check package and runtime compatibility

    npm ls @autogen/core @autogen/openai
    node -v
    

    If versions are out of sync, fix that before touching application code.

Prevention

  • Fail fast on config

    • Validate env vars at process startup with Zod or Valibot.
    • Never let undefined reach your model client constructor.
  • Keep AutoGen packages pinned together

    • Upgrade @autogen/core, provider packages, and any adapters in one pass.
    • Don’t mix random minor versions across packages.
  • Test agent boot separately from agent behavior

    • Add one smoke test that only instantiates AssistantAgent and the model client.
    • Catch deployment crashes before you wire in tools, retrieval, or workflows.

If you want to fix this quickly, start with the model client constructor and your environment variables. In most TypeScript AutoGen projects, that’s where the crash is coming from.
