How to Fix 'authentication failed during development' in CrewAI (TypeScript)
authentication failed during development in CrewAI usually means your agent tried to call a model or backend without a valid auth token, or with the wrong key loaded in the wrong environment. In TypeScript projects, this most often shows up during local dev when .env loading, provider configuration, or SDK initialization is off.
The key detail: this is usually not a CrewAI “agent” bug. It’s almost always a credentials or configuration problem before the first LLM call is made.
The Most Common Cause
The #1 cause is using the wrong environment variable name or failing to load it before instantiating Crew / Agent / LLM.
A very common broken pattern is assuming the key is already available in process.env, but never loading .env, or using the wrong provider variable name.

In practice, the runtime error often looks like one of these:
- `Error: authentication failed during development`
- `401 Unauthorized`
- `OpenAI API error: Incorrect API key provided`
- `AnthropicAuthenticationError`
- `GoogleGenerativeAI Error: API key not valid`
If you’re using a wrapper class like `LLM`, `OpenAIModel`, or provider-specific adapters, the same issue still applies. The auth failure happens because the model client was created with an empty, stale, or mismatched key.
## Other Possible Causes
### 1. Wrong provider key for the model you selected
This happens when you configure an OpenAI model but pass an Anthropic key, or vice versa.

2. .env exists, but your dev runner never loads it
This is common with tsx, vitest, custom Node scripts, and Dockerized local dev.

If .env is not loaded in code, process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY stays undefined.

If you use a framework loader already, verify it actually runs before CrewAI initialization.
3. Using an expired or revoked key
The code can be correct and still fail if the secret was rotated in your vault or dashboard.

Fix by reissuing the secret and redeploying your local env file or secret store entry.
4. Proxy or gateway strips auth headers
If you route requests through an internal gateway, auth can fail even with a valid key.

- •If you’re using a shared config object, inspect which branch sets which credential.

Reduce to one agent and one task
- •Remove tools, memory, delegation, and multi-agent orchestration.
- •Call only a single minimal

If you’re seeing this error specifically during local development in TypeScript, start with .env loading and provider mismatch first. Those two account for most cases I’ve seen in CrewAI integrations.
