How to Fix 'authentication failed during development' in AutoGen (TypeScript)

When you see authentication failed during development in AutoGen TypeScript, it usually means the agent tried to call a model provider with missing, malformed, or unreachable credentials. In practice, this shows up during local runs when your .env is incomplete, your model client is pointed at the wrong endpoint, or your auth header format doesn’t match the provider.

The error often appears alongside provider-specific messages like 401 Unauthorized, invalid_api_key, or AuthenticationError from the underlying SDK. In AutoGen, the failure usually happens before the agent can complete its first tool call or chat turn.

The Most Common Cause

The #1 cause is a bad model client configuration: wrong environment variable name, empty key, or using an OpenAI-compatible client without setting the correct base URL and API key.

Here’s the broken pattern I see most often:

If you’re using an OpenAI-compatible provider like Azure, Ollama, LM Studio, or a gateway proxy, this gets worse because the default OpenAI endpoint is still assumed unless you override it. That produces auth failures that look like a bad key but are really a wrong host.

Other Possible Causes

1) Your .env file is not loaded

AutoGen won’t magically load environment variables unless your app does it.

If that line is missing in a Node script, process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY will be empty even though the value exists in .env.

2) Wrong header format for the provider

Some gateways expect Authorization: Bearer ..., others use custom headers. If you’re wrapping fetch manually, one bad header can trigger authentication failed during development.

3) Using the wrong account/project key

A valid key can still fail if it belongs to another project, org, or tenant with no access to that model.

If that key was issued under a different org than the one that owns the deployed model access, you’ll get a clean-looking auth failure instead of a more obvious permission error.

4) Proxy or firewall stripping auth headers

This happens behind corporate proxies or local dev gateways.

If that proxy removes Authorization, AutoGen sends the request correctly but the upstream service sees no credentials.

How to Debug It

  1. Print what you actually pass into the client

    • Check whether apiKey, baseURL, and model are defined.
    • Don’t log the full secret; log only presence and length.

  2. Call the provider directly outside AutoGen

    • Use curl or a minimal fetch request.
    • If direct auth fails there too, AutoGen is not the problem.

  3. Check for provider-specific response details

    • Look at HTTP status codes and response bodies.
    • A true auth issue usually returns 401 Unauthorized.
    • A misrouted request often returns DNS errors or connection failures instead.
  4. Reduce to one agent and one model call

    • Remove tools, memory, group chat orchestration, and custom middleware.
    • Instantiate only AssistantAgent + one chat completion client.
    • If that works, add complexity back one layer at a time.

Prevention

  • Validate required env vars at startup and fail fast if they’re missing.

  • Keep provider config explicit:

  • Add a smoke test in CI that makes one authenticated request before shipping changes.

  • Store separate keys per environment so dev keys don’t drift into staging or prod.
