Tool use in AI agents is the ability for an AI system to call external functions, APIs, or software tools to get work done. Instead of only generating text, the agent can query a database, check a policy engine, calculate a payment amount, or create a case in a CRM.
How It Works
Think of an AI agent as a relationship manager with access to the bank’s internal systems.
The manager does not memorize every account balance, policy rule, or loan status. When a customer asks a question, the manager looks up the right system, pulls the needed information, and then responds. Tool use is that lookup step.
In practice, the flow looks like this:

For product managers, the key point is this: tool use turns an AI agent from a text generator into an operational assistant. Without tools, it can explain what might be true. With tools, it can act on what is true.

“Why was my debit card transaction declined?”
A tool-enabled agent could handle this like an operations assistant:

- •Query the card processor or fraud engine.
