Tool use in AI agents is the ability for an agent to call external systems, APIs, or software tools to complete a task. In lending, that means the AI does not just generate text; it can check a credit policy, query a loan system, pull KYC data, or calculate an affordability ratio before responding.
How It Works
Think of an AI agent like a loan officer with a checklist and access to the bank’s internal systems.
A normal chatbot answers from what it already “knows.” A tool-using agent can decide it needs more evidence, then call the right system to get it. That might be:

- •A core banking API to confirm account status
- •A document service to read income proofs
- •A sanctions or AML screening service
- •A calculator to compute debt-to-income ratios
The flow is usually simple:

- •The tool returns structured data.
- •The agent uses that data to produce an answer or next step.
A useful analogy is a compliance officer reviewing an application file.
You do not approve a loan based on memory alone. You check the file, review the policy, verify exceptions, and sometimes ask operations for missing documents. Tool use gives the AI that same ability: it can look things up instead of guessing.
For compliance teams, the important point is this: tool use creates a traceable decision path if implemented correctly. You can log which tool was called, what data came back, and how that data influenced the final output.
