Temperature in AI agents is a setting that controls how predictable or random the model’s outputs are. Lower temperature makes the agent more consistent and conservative; higher temperature makes it more varied and creative.

How It Works

Think of temperature like a loan officer’s discretion.

If you give every underwriter the same policy manual and a strict checklist, you get consistent decisions. If you tell them to “use judgment” with more flexibility, you’ll see more variation between cases. Temperature does the same thing for an AI model: it changes how strongly the model sticks to the most likely answer versus exploring other possible answers.

In practice:

  • Low temperature means the model prefers the safest, most probable response.
  • Medium temperature gives some variation while staying mostly on track.
  • High temperature increases randomness, which can produce more diverse but less reliable outputs.

For compliance teams, the key point is this: temperature does not change what data the model has access to. It changes how it chooses among possible responses. That matters because two agents with identical prompts can still behave very differently if one runs at 0.1 and another at 0.8.

A simple analogy is a dice roll vs. a rulebook:

  • At low temperature, the agent behaves like someone following a rulebook.
  • At high temperature, it behaves more like someone improvising from memory.

For regulated workflows, especially lending decisions, you usually want the rulebook behavior.

Compliance officers should care about temperature because it directly affects control, consistency, and auditability.

    • A low-temperature agent is less likely to phrase policy explanations differently each time.

    • If an AI agent produces different answers to the same question, it becomes harder to defend its behavior in reviews or complaints.

Real Example

A lender uses an AI agent to draft pre-qualification email responses after a customer submits an application form.

The compliance requirement is simple: the agent must not imply approval before underwriting is complete. It also must avoid saying anything that could be interpreted as a guaranteed rate or commitment.

Scenario A: Low temperature

The prompt tells the agent to respond using approved language only.

Output:

“Thanks for your application. We’ve received your information and will review it against our lending criteria. This message is not an approval or commitment to lend.”

This is stable, predictable, and easy to approve for use in production.

Scenario B: High temperature

The same prompt runs with a higher setting.

Possible output:

“Great news — your application looks promising based on what we’ve seen so far. We’ll finalize your offer after review.”

That sounds helpful, but it crosses into risky territory. It may create customer expectations that no final credit decision has been made. From a compliance perspective, that’s exactly the kind of drift that creates complaints and remediation work.

The lesson is not that high temperature is always bad. The lesson is that in regulated lending workflows, unpredictability becomes a control issue fast.
