Think of temperature like the discretion you give a call center agent when answering customer questions.

  • If the script is strict, every agent gives nearly the same answer.
  • If the script allows judgment, responses vary more from one agent to another.

AI models work the same way. They generate text by choosing the next word from a set of possible options. Temperature changes how strongly the model prefers the most likely option versus exploring less likely ones.

  • Temperature = 0.0 for legal clause extraction and policy lookup

Here is what happens in practice:

A staff member asks: “Can we waive an overdraft fee if the customer says they were traveling?”

At low temperature, the model returns something like:

“Fee waivers are permitted only under approved hardship criteria and must be escalated according to policy section 4.2.”

That response is narrow, stable, and close to source language.

At higher temperature, the same prompt might produce:

“In some cases we may consider waiving fees if there were unusual circumstances such as travel disruptions.”

That sounds reasonable, but it introduces risk because it may imply discretion that policy does not allow.
