What is ReAct in AI Agents? A Guide for developers in fintech
ReAct is an AI agent pattern that combines Reasoning and Acting in a loop: the model thinks about the problem, takes an action, observes the result, then thinks again. In practice, ReAct lets an agent decide what to do next instead of trying to answer everything in one shot.
How It Works
Think of ReAct like a fintech ops engineer working a customer case with access to internal tools.
A plain LLM is like someone answering from memory. A ReAct agent is like someone who:
- •reads the ticket,
- •checks the core banking system,
- •looks up KYC status,
- •asks another system for transaction history,
- •then updates its conclusion based on what it found.
That loop matters because real fintech problems are not static Q&A. They require tool use, state changes, and verification.
The basic cycle looks like this:

A useful analogy: ReAct is like a branch banker who does not guess. They ask one question, check one system, interpret the response, then decide the next step. That is much safer than trying to solve everything from a single prompt.
For engineers, the key point is that ReAct turns an LLM into a control loop. The model is not just generating text; it is choosing actions based on observations.
A typical implementation uses:
- •a prompt that instructs the model to reason about next steps,
- •tool definitions for APIs or database queries,
- •an execution loop that feeds tool outputs back into the model,
- •guardrails so the agent cannot call unsafe tools or exceed policy.
Why It Matters
Fintech teams should care because ReAct solves problems that show up in production every day:

For product managers, this means better automation without pretending the model knows everything. For engineers, it means building agents that behave more like orchestrators than chatbots.
Real Example
Let’s say you are building an internal support agent for a digital bank. A customer says:
“My debit card was declined at checkout. Can you tell me why?”
A naive chatbot might answer:
“Your card may have insufficient funds.”
That is risky because it could be wrong.
A ReAct agent would do something closer to this:

- •It identifies missing facts: card status, recent auth attempts, account balance, fraud flags.

That sequence is valuable because it keeps the agent grounded in actual system output.

In production, you would add:

- •timeout handling,
- •retries with idempotency keys,
- •PII redaction in logs,
- •policy checks before any customer-facing response.
That last part matters. ReAct helps with reasoning over tools, but it does not remove your responsibility for access control or data governance.
