Human-in-the-loop in AI agents is a design pattern where a human reviews, approves, corrects, or overrides an AI decision before it is executed. In banking, it means the agent can do the first pass on a task, but a person stays in the loop for high-risk, high-value, or uncertain actions.
How It Works
Think of it like a bank teller with a supervisor sitting nearby.
The teller handles routine work quickly: checking documents, reading customer intent, drafting responses, or flagging suspicious activity. The supervisor steps in only when the case is unusual, risky, or above a set threshold.
That is human-in-the-loop for AI agents:
- •The agent receives input from a customer, employee, or internal system.
- •It analyzes the request and produces a recommendation or draft action.
- •A policy decides whether the action can be auto-executed or needs human review.
- •A human approves, edits, rejects, or escalates the result.
- •The final action is logged for audit and future improvement.
For product managers, the key idea is not “AI replaces people.” It is “AI handles volume; humans handle judgment.”
A practical way to think about it is a traffic light:
- •Green: low-risk actions can go straight through.
- •Amber: uncertain cases need human review.
- •Red: blocked actions require mandatory approval.
This pattern matters because banking workflows rarely have equal risk. A balance inquiry is not the same as closing an account, changing payment instructions, or approving credit. Human-in-the-loop lets you separate those paths cleanly.

Here is the product angle: if you design every workflow as fully autonomous, you will block deployment. If you design every workflow as fully manual, you get no value from AI. Human-in-the-loop is the middle path that gets real systems into production.
Real Example
A retail bank uses an AI agent to help with disputed card transactions.
The agent does three things:
- •Reads the customer’s complaint from chat or email
- •Checks transaction history and merchant details
- •Drafts a recommended outcome based on policy
If the dispute is straightforward — for example, duplicate charge from the same merchant — the agent can prepare the case summary and route it for quick approval. If the claim involves fraud indicators, international transactions, or repeated disputes on the same account, the agent stops and asks for human review before any action is taken.
The human case manager then sees:

- •Transaction timeline
- •Agent recommendation
- •Policy flags
- •Confidence score or reason codes
The manager can approve the refund path, request more evidence, or escalate to fraud operations.

That is better than either extreme. Full automation would be risky. Full manual handling would be slow and expensive. Human-in-the-loop gives you controlled throughput.
