Human-in-the-loop in AI agents is a design pattern where a human reviews, approves, corrects, or overrides an AI action before it becomes final. In lending, it means the agent can draft decisions or recommendations, but a person stays in the loop for cases that need judgment, compliance, or exception handling.
How It Works
Think of it like loan underwriting with an escalation path.
The AI agent does the first pass: it reads an application, pulls bureau data, checks income consistency, flags missing documents, and drafts a recommendation. If the case is simple and within policy thresholds, it may auto-approve low-risk steps. If anything looks unusual — thin credit file, income mismatch, fraud signals, policy exceptions — the agent pauses and sends the case to a human underwriter or credit officer.
That human is not there to re-do everything. They are there to handle judgment calls the model should not own alone.
A practical flow looks like this:

- •Agent gathers data from internal and external systems
- •Agent scores risk and checks policy rules
- •Agent either:
- •proceeds automatically for low-risk cases, or
- •routes the case to a human for review
- •Human approves, edits, rejects, or requests more evidence

The key idea is control points. The AI handles speed and consistency. The human handles ambiguity and accountability.
For lending teams, this is similar to how a teller machine works with a bank officer nearby. The machine can do routine tasks fast. But if the transaction is odd — large cash withdrawal, account mismatch, identity issue — a person steps in before money moves.

The agent ingests bank statements, tax returns, business registration data, and bureau records. It calculates cash-flow stability, detects document gaps, and drafts one of three outcomes:

One application comes in from a business with strong revenue but inconsistent deposits. The agent also detects that the company changed legal names twice in 18 months. That combination does not automatically mean fraud, but it is enough to trigger review.
The workflow:

This is better than full automation because the model does not have to guess whether the name changes are benign restructuring or a risk signal. It also beats pure manual underwriting because the analyst starts with a structured packet instead of raw files.
In insurance lending-adjacent workflows — like premium financing or commercial coverage underwriting — the same pattern applies. The agent drafts a recommendation; the underwriter signs off on exceptions.
