Human-in-the-loop in AI agents means a human reviews, approves, or corrects the agent’s output before it takes action. In banking, it is the control pattern where an AI can draft a decision or recommendation, but a compliance officer, analyst, or supervisor must intervene at defined points.

How It Works

Think of it like a loan approval workflow with mandatory sign-off.

The AI agent does the first pass:

  • It reads the customer request
  • Pulls data from core banking, KYC, sanctions, and transaction systems
  • Drafts a recommendation, such as “approve,” “escalate,” or “reject”
  • Explains why it reached that conclusion

Then a human steps in at one of three points:

  • Before action: the human approves the AI’s recommendation before anything is sent to a customer or system
  • During action: the human monitors the process and can stop it if something looks wrong
  • After action: the human reviews what happened for audit, quality, and policy tuning

For compliance teams, this is not just “someone checking the bot.” It is a designed control. The point is to make sure high-risk decisions do not rely on model output alone.

A useful analogy is cheque signing authority. A junior staff member can prepare the payment instruction, but they cannot release funds without an authorized signatory. Human-in-the-loop works the same way: the AI prepares work, but authority stays with the human.

In practice, you define:

  • Which tasks the AI can handle
  • Which thresholds trigger review
  • Who can approve or override
  • What evidence gets logged for audit

That last part matters. If you cannot show who approved what, when they approved it, and why the system behaved as it did, you do not have control — you have automation with weak governance.

    • That makes internal audit and regulator questions much easier to answer.

A simple way to think about it: if the AI is your first-line analyst, the human-in-the-loop is your second-line control embedded into execution.

A retail bank uses an AI agent to assist with suspicious transaction alerts.

Here’s the workflow:

  • The transaction monitoring system flags a cluster of card payments across multiple merchants
  • The AI agent gathers supporting context:
    • customer profile
    • recent account activity
    • merchant risk indicators
    • past alert history
  • It drafts a case summary and suggests one of three actions:
    • close as benign
    • request more information
    • escalate to financial crime investigation

But the agent cannot close high-risk alerts on its own.

Instead:

  • A compliance analyst reviews the summary
  • The analyst checks whether there are missing facts or misleading patterns
  • If needed, they override the recommendation and add notes
  • The final decision is stored with timestamps and reviewer identity
