What is grounding in AI Agents? A Guide for compliance officers in wealth management
Grounding in AI agents is the practice of tying an agent’s answer to approved, verifiable source material instead of letting it improvise. In wealth management, grounding means the agent can only respond using policy documents, product facts, client records, market data, and other controlled sources you can audit.
How It Works
Think of grounding like a compliance officer asking an advisor for a recommendation and requiring them to cite the exact policy, fact sheet, or client profile that supports it.
Without grounding, an AI agent is like a smart junior employee who speaks confidently but may mix up products, invent details, or generalize from memory. With grounding, the agent first retrieves relevant documents or database records, then generates an answer constrained by that evidence.
A typical grounded workflow looks like this:
- •The user asks a question, such as “Can this client be offered a structured note?”
- •The agent searches approved sources:
- •suitability policy
- •product disclosure documents
- •client risk profile
- •jurisdiction-specific rules
- •The agent builds its response only from those sources.
- •The system returns the answer with citations or traceable references.
For compliance teams, the key point is that grounding changes the agent from “knowledge-based guessing” to “evidence-based answering.”
This matters because large language models are good at producing fluent text even when they are wrong. Grounding reduces that risk by forcing the model to stay close to controlled content.
A simple analogy: if an analyst writes a memo from memory, you review it carefully. If they attach the source pack and quote the exact policy sections used, your review is faster and more defensible. Grounding gives AI that same source pack discipline.

A private bank wants to use an AI assistant for relationship managers. A client asks whether they can invest in a high-yield structured product.
The grounded agent should not answer from general market knowledge alone. It should check:

- •concentration limits
- •product classification
- •internal approval rules
- •jurisdictional restrictions
- •latest product disclosure document
If the client profile shows low risk tolerance and the product is classified as complex/high-risk, the grounded response might be:
“Based on your current risk profile and our product suitability policy, this product cannot be recommended at this time. The relevant controls are in Suitability Policy section 4.2 and Product Disclosure Document v3.1.”
That answer is grounded because it cites approved sources and reflects firm policy rather than generic financial commentary.
If grounding were missing, the assistant might say something like:
“This could be a good diversification tool for conservative investors.”
That sounds plausible but may be non-compliant if it ignores suitability constraints or misstates how the product can be sold.
For compliance officers, this is where grounding becomes operationally useful:

- •it reduces reliance on vague “the model said so” explanations
