What is function calling in AI Agents? A Guide for developers in lending
Function calling in AI agents is the ability for a model to decide when it needs external tools, then return a structured request that tells your application which function to run and with what inputs. In lending systems, it lets an AI agent move from “I think the borrower qualifies” to “call the income-verification service with these fields” instead of guessing.
How It Works
Think of function calling like a loan officer handing a checklist to an operations team.
The officer does not manually check every system. They identify the task, fill in the required fields, and send it to the right team: pull credit, verify employment, calculate debt-to-income, or check policy rules. The AI agent plays the role of the officer, and your backend functions are the teams doing the actual work.
The flow is usually:
- •The user asks a question or gives an instruction.
- •The model reads the request and decides whether it can answer directly or needs a tool.
- •If it needs a tool, it emits a structured payload such as JSON.
- •Your application validates that payload and executes the matching function.
- •The function returns data to the model.
- •The model uses that data to produce a final answer or take another step.
A simple example:

The important part is that the model is not inventing numbers or making up system actions. It is selecting from functions you defined and passing structured inputs your code can trust after validation.

Lending systems cannot rely on free-form guesses for credit decisions, compliance checks, or pricing inputs. Function calling forces the model to ask for tools instead of fabricating answers. - •
Connects natural language to real business systems
Borrowers and internal staff can speak naturally: “Check whether this applicant passes policy.” The agent translates that into API calls against LOS, CRM, KYC, fraud, or pricing engines. - •
Keeps decision logic where it belongs
Policy rules should live in code or rule engines, not inside prompts. Function calling lets the model orchestrate while your services remain source of truth. - •
Improves auditability
Every tool call can be logged: input, output, timestamp, user context, and decision path. That matters when you need to explain why an application was routed, declined, or escalated.
Real Example
Let’s say you are building an underwriting assistant for a personal loan platform.
A loan ops analyst asks:
“Can we prequalify this applicant for a $15k unsecured loan?”
The AI agent should not answer from memory. It should call functions in sequence:

That is function calling in practice: natural language in, structured tool request out, deterministic business logic executed by your systems.
