What is embeddings in AI Agents? A Guide for product managers in lending
Embeddings are numerical representations of text, documents, images, or other data that capture their meaning in a format AI models can compare mathematically. In AI agents, embeddings let the system understand that two pieces of content are similar even when they use different words.
How It Works
Think of embeddings like a lending analyst’s mental filing system.
A good analyst does not just sort applications by exact keywords. They know that:
- •“salary slips” and “payslips” mean the same thing
- •“missed payment” is closer to “delinquency” than to “income verification”
- •“self-employed income proof” belongs near bank statements and tax returns
Embeddings do this at machine scale. The model turns each piece of text into a long list of numbers, called a vector. Similar meanings end up with vectors that are close together in that mathematical space.
For a product manager in lending, the easiest way to picture it is this:
- •Each document, customer query, policy note, or support ticket gets a coordinate on a giant map
- •Similar items sit near each other
- •Different items sit far apart
That matters because AI agents do not just need to generate answers. They need to retrieve the right context before answering.

With embeddings:
