Chain of thought is the step-by-step reasoning process an AI model uses to work through a problem before giving an answer. In AI agents, chain of thought is the internal sequence of intermediate decisions, checks, and conclusions that helps the agent handle multi-step tasks more reliably.
How It Works
Think of it like a credit analyst’s underwriting notes.
A good analyst does not jump straight from application to approval. They check income, debt service, collateral, policy exceptions, fraud signals, and then write down the logic behind the decision. Chain of thought is the AI equivalent of that internal working process.
For an AI agent in lending, the flow usually looks like this:
