Agents are AI systems that can take actions toward a goal, using tools, memory, and planning to decide what to do next. Chatbots are AI systems that primarily respond to user messages in conversation, usually without independently taking multi-step actions.

How It Works

A chatbot is like a skilled call center rep sitting at a terminal. It answers questions, follows the script, and may pull from a knowledge base, but it waits for the customer to ask each next question.

An agent is more like an operations analyst with system access. You give it a goal, and it can break the task into steps, call APIs, check results, retry if needed, and stop when the job is done.

For fintech engineering managers, that distinction matters because the difference is not just “better AI.” It changes the control flow of your product.

A chatbot usually looks like this:

  • User asks: “What’s my card balance?”
  • Model interprets intent
  • System fetches data from one source
  • Model formats an answer

An agent usually looks like this:

  • User asks: “Find why my card payment failed and fix it if possible”

Here’s the key difference: the chatbot answers questions about the problem. The agent helps complete the workflow around the problem.
