LangGraph and Qdrant solve different problems, and startups often compare them as if they were substitutes. They are not: LangGraph is for orchestrating multi-step LLM workflows with state, branching, retries, and human-in-the-loop control; Qdrant is a vector database for storing embeddings and running similarity search.

If you are a startup building an AI product, use Qdrant first when retrieval matters, and add LangGraph when your app needs workflow control beyond a single prompt chain.

When LangGraph Wins

LangGraph wins when your product is not just “ask a model a question,” but “run a controlled workflow around the model.”

  • You need branching logic with state

    • Example: an insurance claims assistant that routes between fraud checks, policy lookup, document extraction, and human review.
    • LangGraph lets you define nodes and conditional edges so the flow is explicit instead of buried in prompt spaghetti.
  • You need retries and durable execution

    • If one tool call fails or an LLM returns malformed JSON, you want to retry only that node.
    • LangGraph supports checkpointing through its graph execution model so you can resume from intermediate state instead of restarting the whole run.
  • You need human-in-the-loop approval

    • Example: a banking assistant that drafts a wire transfer but must pause for approval before execution.
    • This is where graph-based control beats ad hoc agent loops. You can insert review nodes cleanly.
  • You are building an agent with tools

    • If your system calls APIs like CRM lookup, policy service queries, KYC checks, or ticket creation, LangGraph gives you structure.
    • It works well with tool-calling patterns because each action becomes a node with explicit inputs and outputs.

A simple mental model: if your app has more than one “if this then that” decision around the model call itself, LangGraph starts paying off.

That pattern is useful when the workflow matters more than raw retrieval.

When Qdrant Wins

Qdrant wins when the core problem is finding the right context fast.

  • You are building RAG

    • This is the default startup use case: ingest documents as embeddings and retrieve top-k chunks before generation.
    • Qdrant’s upsert() plus search()/query_points() flow is exactly what you want for production retrieval.
  • You need metadata filtering

    • Example: only retrieve documents for a specific tenant, policy type, region, or date range.
    • Qdrant payload filters are practical here because startup products usually need multi-tenant isolation from day one.
  • You care about hybrid search patterns

    • Semantic similarity alone is often not enough.
    • Qdrant supports combining vector search with structured payload constraints so you can narrow results without bolting on another datastore.
  • You need low-latency similarity at scale

    • If your app serves customer support answers or recommendations under load, retrieval speed matters more than orchestration complexity.
    • Qdrant is built for this job; LangGraph is not.

If your product roadmap includes “search my knowledge base” or “find similar cases,” Qdrant should be in the stack immediately.

For startups Specifically

My recommendation: start with Qdrant unless your product explicitly needs agentic workflow control on day one. Most startups think they need orchestration first; in reality they need reliable retrieval first because that’s what makes the AI output grounded and useful.

Add LangGraph when your user journey requires branching decisions, approvals, retries across tools, or long-running stateful execution. In other words: Qdrant powers the brain’s memory; LangGraph controls the brain’s process.
