You define exactly when the agent can call tools like search_customer_profile, fetch_transaction_history, or escalate_to_human.

  • You need human approval in the loop

    In banking workflows, some actions must stop for review before execution. LangGraph handles this cleanly with checkpointing and interrupt-style patterns so a node can pause before something risky like initiating a payment review or changing account status.

  • Your workflow branches based on business rules

    Fintech is full of forks: fraud score above threshold, route to analyst; missing documents, request more info; low confidence on entity match, fall back to manual review. LangGraph is built for this exact problem because branching is native to the graph model instead of being bolted onto a single-agent loop.

  • You need durable execution

    If a workflow spans multiple steps across systems and sessions, LangGraph’s state management matters. You can persist graph state with a checkpointer so an interrupted process resumes instead of restarting from scratch.

When Helicone Wins

  • You already have LLM calls in production and need visibility now

    Helicone is the fastest way to see what your models are doing: prompts, completions, latency, token usage, errors, and cost by request. For fintech teams under pressure to prove control over AI spend and behavior, that visibility pays off immediately.

  • You need centralized logging and audit trails

    Finance teams care about who called what model, with which prompt template, at what time. Helicone gives you request-level tracing through its proxy/gateway setup or SDK integration so you can inspect traffic without rebuilding instrumentation everywhere.

  • You want cost controls across teams

    If multiple product squads are hitting OpenAI or Anthropic directly through different services, costs become invisible fast. Helicone helps enforce rate limits, monitor spend per key/project/model, and catch runaway prompt loops before they burn budget.

My recommendation: build the workflow in LangGraph and put Helicone in front of your model calls. That gives you deterministic agent behavior for regulated processes plus operational visibility for auditability, cost control, and debugging.

If you’re starting from zero and only have one choice right now:

  • Choose LangGraph if the system has branching logic, approvals, retries across steps, or any action that could affect money or customer accounts.
  • Choose Helicone if your main pain is understanding model usage across existing services and proving control to engineering or risk stakeholders.

In fintech, orchestration without observability is reckless. Observability without orchestration is just better logs on a broken agent flow.
