AI is changing the engineering manager role in banking in a very specific way: you are no longer just managing delivery, reliability, and people. The managers who stay relevant in 2026 will not be the ones who can train a model from scratch. They will be the ones who can evaluate ML use cases, ask the right questions of data science teams, and ship AI-enabled systems that survive compliance review, operational risk scrutiny, and production traffic.

You do not need to become a research scientist, but you do need to understand how models behave in production: training vs inference, feature drift, latency tradeoffs, retraining triggers, and failure modes. A strong engineering manager should be able to read an ML architecture diagram and spot weak points before they become incidents.
